After visiting San Juan del Sur for more than a decade, I’ve learned that there’s no better way to experience this stunning coastline than from the ocean.
I find that sitting on a boat, feeling the wind in my hair and gazing at the unfolding shoreline is enough to renew my love for San Juan del Sur. But you can kick your experience up a notch by adding something extra. Here are three ideas:
A Fishing Charter
Get on the water with a keen fisherman and you’ll notice that they’re not looking at the landscape (except for purely navigational purposes); their focus is finding fish. They scan the ocean looking for variations in surface conditions, search the sky for feeding birds, obcess with how the lures are sitting on the waves and keep an eye on their rod tips for the tell tale jerk of a biting fish.
As all keen fishermen know, anything is possible. Today could be the day that big boy comes your way. In San Juan del Sur Dorado, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo, Rooster, Amberjack, Kingfish, Barracuda and Mackerel are the usual catch, depending on the season.
A Booze Cruise
If hopping onto a boat with a bunch of strangers intent on drinking as much as possible isn’t your idea of social and scenic bliss, remember that your experience can be customized. Choose the right company and the experience can be ridiculously fun.
Total relaxation, the surging beauty of the ocean and, yes, lots of rum drinks. We recommend the afternoon session so that you can toast the setting sun.
A Beach Paradise
The first time I saw Playa Blanca I fell for it…hard. Candidate for the most picturesque beach in Nicaragua, and only accessible by boat, a visit here feels both invigorating and luxurious.
Sailing charters visit Playa Blanca regularly on full day and half-day trips. Another popular anchorage is Playa Brasilito, to the south of San Juan del Sur. Both make for an outstanding day on the ocean.
Sailing to one of these stunning beaches could be the highlight of your vacation. You’ll feel relaxed and recharged. And if you happen upon a breaching whale or a pod of dolphins your trip will turn into an adrenaline filled event.
How about you? What do you do to rekindle your love for this stunning coastline?
