5 Choice Granada Hotels

I’m a beach person.

I’m crazy about the surf in San Juan del Sur which is why I’ve lived here since 2007.

But I do enjoy sneaking away to the nearby colonial city of Granada on occasion because of its diverse selection of restaurants, art galleries, buzzing night life and close proximity to Laguna de Apoyo – a precious Volcanic crater lake.

If you’re planning a visit to Granada, here are 5 choice hotels to consider:

1. Mansion de Chocolate

This colorful boutique hotel is a destination in itself.  The colorful walls are lined with hand-painted masks and art from countries throughout Central and South America giving the interior walkways the feel of an art gallery. It has a roof top yoga deck with a breathtaking view of Volcan Mombacho, a large outdoor swimming pool and tiki bar surrounded by luscious trees, flowers and an in-house spa.

Breakfast is served in the Choco Museo, a chocolate factory museum that educates visitors on the process of making chocolate from locally grown cocoa beans. The hotel is also home to Metamorphosis Nica, a women’s cooperative making purses and jewelry out of recycled bottle caps.

2. Hotel con Corazón

The name translates to “hotel with a heart” and its social mission is embedded in every aspect of each  visit. 100% of hotel profits are reinvested in an educational foundation, local residents are employed and volunteer opportunities are available.

You can feel very good about staying here.

3. Hotel Colonial

Modern meets antiquity at Hotel Colonial. Here the colonial nature of Granada has been thoughtfully preserved alongside the modern upgrades and conveniences. The rooms are finely decorated, exquisitely clean and exceptionally large.  The swim up pool bar is a heavenly oasis after walking through Granada’s streets.

It’s worth coming here just for the European style breakfast blended with Nicaraguan traditions. The central location makes it an easy walk to the cathedral (Catedral de Granada) and central park (Parque Colón).

4. Tribal Hotel

If you’re after a romantic getaway, this is your spot.  The hotel is located just a few blocks off the beaten tourist track. From the moment you enter, time slows down and cares fade into the distance.  The pool side lounging beds rimmed by low hanging palm trees will lure you into your vacation.  The walls are decorated with life size paintings and hand-carved wood.  The concierge is ready to make all your travel plans effortless.

No more than two people are allowed per room to ensure a relaxed vibe. The hotel has received rave reviews from Vogue Magazine, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveller.  The Tribal Hotel won’t disappoint.

Hotel Alhambra

5. Hotel Alhambra

Given its location on the edge of Granada’s central park and directly opposite the cathedral, the price tag is nearly impossible to beat.  The classic colonial-style hotel dates back to 1898 and you’ll find historic photographs on the walls of the hotel lobby and antique furniture scattered throughout.  The floors are lined with original colonial printed tiles and the green courtyard opens up to the sky. Here you can hear the church bells ring and watch the horse drawn carriages whizz by in the morning while sipping on locally grown and roasted coffee.

If you enjoy people watching, this is your spot.

Over to you

No question, Granada is well worth a visit. And now that you’ve got a list of great hotels to choose from, perhaps it’s time to book your trip?
