After a tasteful renovation in 2007, La Posada Azul went from historic family house built in 1910 to perhaps the most delightful boutique inn in San Juan del Sur. The public spaces – especially the large sala and wide veranda that runs the length of the house – conjure the feel of a stylish, well-furnished hacienda.
While the historic sensibility of the home has been retained, you’ll find all the modern conveniences needed for a comfortable stay. Each of the 7 rooms is uniquely decorated with wicker furniture and regional art to take advantage of the high ceilings and wooden floors. Brightly painted bathrooms, plush cotton towels, 100% cotton sheets, excellent mattresses and beautiful throws round things off in style.
In fact the rooms at La Posada Azul are among the most stylish in the center of town, but rates tend to be more affordable than at luxury competitors, since the hotel does not have ocean views (though the beach is within walking distance.)
A little store at the entrance is packed with stylish Nicaraguan objects and tasteful local souvenirs. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, the gift shop is well worth a visit and deserves a full review of its own.
A full breakfast is served al fresco in the open-side dining area overlooking the pool, tropical garden and water fountain. A rancho-style honor bar surrounded by colorful bougainvillaea is the perfect place for guests to congregate in the afternoons.
Walk through the doors of Posada Azul and you’ll feel like you have stepped back in time. Yet the more immediate enticements of San Juan del Sur are still right on your doorstop.
