If you’re looking for an inexpensive entertainment option that promises action and an authentic travel experience, consider catching a sporting event at the “parque deportivo”, sports park.
Located across from the beach on the southern end in between Cafetin Jugoso and the Barrio Planta Project, the sports park is San Juan del Sur’s only true sports facility. With the help of donors, it was built and is managed by Comunidad Connect.
Coconut venders sit outside the entrance gates and fisherman ride past on bicycles carrying their catch of the day. Children from Barrio Planta Project classes peak through classroom windows when sports are in play. And the teal blue bay is an ever present backdrop.
The park’s concrete playing surface is wrapped by bleachers decorated with graffiti art to hold enthusiastic sports fans. The floor is painted with lines that serve basketball, volleyball and futball sala. (Futball sala is a version of soccer played on a shortened field, with smaller goals and a hard playing surface). Each end zone has a small soccer goal (for sala) and basketball hoops and there’s lighting for night games.
Comunidad Connect plays host to a season of basketball and futball sala as well as multiple volleyball games between US visiting teams and the Nicaraguan national team when Bring It Promotions brings its tours to town. The park is also the site for occasional outdoor concerts, the Saturday farmers market (when it’s not in it’s usual location at Big Wave Daves) and other fundraising events throughout the year. And it’s also used by local schools and non-profits to run youth sports clinics.
The standard entrance fee to a sports event at the park is 2 cordobas which goes to maintain the facility and support local youth programs. There’s a small vender inside selling drinks, snacks and ice-cold Toñas. Alejandro’s impressively loud sound system and DJ skills accompany most major events adding energy to the supporters in the stands.
