Recently I was visited by an exclusive luxury travel agency from the States passing through Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Their time was valuable and limited. They had only one day to spend in San Juan del Sur and I had only one chance to make a good impression. We all wanted to make the most of it.
As their guide, I took them straight to San Juan del Sur Surf and Sport. We booked a panga (Nicaraguan fishing boat), tore out of the bay and zipped up the coastline determined to see and do as much as possible.
The boat captain Luis blasted tunes on the sound system while navigating through the bumpy blue waters. My crew wasted no time digging into the cooler full of all-you-can-drink ice cold Toña beer that was included in our boat package. Suddenly Luis pointed to dive-bombing pelicans and asked if we wanted to fish. Of course we said “Yes”. He set up 3 poles on the back of the boat and literally within minutes everyone on board had reeled in a beautiful tuna.
After we had our fill of fishing, I directed the captain to Playa Blanca so that my crew could enjoy that “private beach” experience that Nicaragua does so well. As anticipated, we had the beach completely to ourselves.
We took turns diving off the boat into the warm clear water and finally swam to the shore to eat our pack lunches. While we were taking photos to make our Facebook friends jealous, Luis swam from the boat to the shore to deliver us a bucket of beer on ice.
The president of my crew looked at me with a smile and said, “It simply cannot get any better than this.” We held our beers high and toasted to the fact that only one day is not enough in San Juan del Sur.
I have two pieces of advice for visitors; first, don’t leave without getting on a boat and experiencing the area from the water, and second, never limit yourself to just one day in San Juan del Sur.
San Juan del Sur Surf and Sport offers an array of sea adventures including fishing charters, surf trips by boat, snorkeling, spearfishing, night fishing and whale watching. Their least expensive and most popular is the infamous “sunset booze cruise”. For only $20 per person, you get 3 hours on the boat with all you can drink Toña. All excursions can be booked directly through the office in town or through their website.
